TOAST TO EXCELLENCE;

The School Family Association would like to thank everyone for their generous support of the TOAST TO EXCELLENCE.  This event raised funds that go directly to the St. Michael teachers and staff.  If you were unable to attend and would still like to contribute please send the donation to the office marked SFA by Nov 21st. Thank you so much for your support!

EXTRA IN-SERVICE DAY FOR TEACHERS:

Monsignor Perkinton has granted all elementary schools in the Lincoln Diocese the ability to take an extra in-service day for teachers and administrators.  St Michael will be taking January 4, 2018 as our extra in-service day.  This will extend our Christmas vacation for students by one day.  We WILL have school on Friday, Jan. 5th.   Thank you for your flexibility regarding this change in our calendar.

LOCK DOWN PRACTICE

St. Michael School practiced an all school lock down on October 24, 2017 and the results were well documented and debriefed in a meeting that followed on November 13, 2017.  The School was locked down tight in less than 30 seconds, and was the school was swept by the Crisis Response team.  Our Lock Down practice went well and the students and staff followed the expected protocol.  St Michael School is devoted to practicing these Lock Down drills at least once a quarter, some announced, and others not, so that the students, faculty, and staff become attune to  the proper protocol of how to handle a Lock Down situation should it present itself.  Our St. Michael School Parent handbook has information regarding what the proper protocol for parents would be should our school ever be in this type of situation.  Please see below for that information from the Parent Handbook.

Parent Directives in Emergency Situations (How You can Help)

·         BE PREPARED FOR A SCHOOL EMERGENCY

•       Be sure that your child’s emergency contact information is always accurate and current.

•       Speak with your child about basic personal safety and safety procedures at school.

·         IN CASE OF A SCHOOL EMERGENCY

•       DO NOT call or rush to your child’s school.  Phone lines and staff are needed for emergency response efforts.

•       DO NOT phone your child.  Staff and students are not to use cell phone communication during an emergency, for safety reasons.

•       Tune in to local TV/radio stations for official school news alerts.  Rely only on information from St. Michael School’s email system or public safety officials.  Listen to the radio or check email for official information regarding unification with your child.

•       Cooperate fully with staff, emergency or law personnel on the scene.

·         FOLLOWING AN EMERGENCY

•       Listen to and acknowledge your child’s concerns.

•       Provide reassurance that your child is safe.

•       Assure your child that additional prevention efforts are being put into place.

•       Seek help from school personnel or a mental health professional if concerns persist.

STUDENT COUNCIL FOOD DRIVE   - Can you spare a Can?

The Student Council started up the Food Drive on November 13 and it will run through November 20th.  Please have students bring in any non-perishables, i.e. canned food, pasta, jarred sauces, peanut butter, etc..,  that will go to a great cause, especially this time of year.  Catholic Social Services picks up the food on November 21st and will then give us an update of how many pounds of food our school brings in.  We are very fortunate to have the supportive community of St. Michael that rises continually to help others in need.  Thank you for taking part in this very worthy cause.  Please see attached flyer for more information.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT LESSON –

The safe environment lesson that is provided by the Lincoln Diocesan Office, was taught today, November 16, 2017 to all students in Kindergarten through 8th grade.  All classroom teachers either sent a parent packet home hard copy, or sent an email attaching the parent packet to that email.  Being proactive with regards to safe environment and giving students the tools they need in order to understand situations that may feel uncomfortable is a top priority at St. Michael School. We are appreciative of the partnership with our parents when it comes to the safety of our children and the environment in which they move in and out of daily.  We thank you for the ability to work closely with you for the welfare of our children.  If you have any questions regarding the lesson that was taught please don’t hesitate to contact us.
