Many of you know of the terrible high school shooting tragedy that took place in Parkland, Florida yesterday.  Please pray for those who fell victim to this horrible crime, and for the families and community who are picking up the pieces and trying to deal with it.   Also for the perpetrator, as he needs prayers at this time as well.

At St. Michael, our top priority is for the safety of your children.  We work diligently to keep our procedures and school safety systems in place at all times, and continue to look at best practices to improve on what we are already doing.

Our most recent lockdown practice was completed in January, and the LPD was on campus during that drill.  We will continue to practice emergency drills so that they become well known to the students as part of our safety protocol.  As partners in your children’s safety, please know that you also play an important part in the security of your children.  Being aware of something that doesn’t look right or sound right can be a lifesaving piece of information.  Please don’t hesitate to bring those to our attention.  We thank you for entrusting us with your children and helping us to keep them safe.

Reminder – NO school tomorrow, Feb. 16 or Monday, Feb. 19.  Have a wonderful weekend!

The retreat for 1st Holy Communion has been moved to Thursday, April 19 from 8:00-3:00 at St. Michael.  Initially it was scheduled for April 20.

2nd grade parents, please make that change on your calendar.  The information from the parent meeting this week does have it listed correctly.  Thank you!

INFORMATION CONCERNING THE FLU

St. Michael has had very few cases of diagnosed flu (10) but we feel it is a needed communication to let parents know the symptoms of and differences between colds and flu.  Please remember that children need to be symptom free, including fever free without pain relievers, for 24 hours before returning to school.  When a student is diagnosed with flu, the typical number of days absent is between 5 and 7 days.  Please check with your health care provider for more information.  Thank you!

Cold vs. Flu

A cold is a milder respiratory illness than the flu. While cold symptoms can make you feel bad for a few days, flu symptoms can make you feel quite ill for a few days to weeks.

 Cold symptoms:

sore throat

runny nose

congestion

cough

 Flu symptoms:

sore throat

fever

headache

muscle aches

soreness

congestion

cough

Most flu symptoms gradually improve over three to five days, but it's not uncommon to feel run down for a week or more. It is strongly recommended that staff and students with a fever over 100 degrees stay home until they are fever-free for at least a minimum of 24 hours without the aid of fever reducing medication. We recommend that students and staff also seek the advice of their medical provider in regards to use of antiviral medication and when to safely return to school.

A LENT TO REMEMBER FROM FORMED.ORG

Looking for something to really get your Lent going?   The Transforming Power of Confession, A Lent to Remember explores the ways God reaches out to each of us with his mercy. Through Christ’s suffering on the cross in the Paschal Mystery and his perpetual reception of his people in the Sacrament of Reconciliation, God makes his love, his very self, present to us in the world.  Formed.org is an amazing resource that offers wonderful ways for us to stretch ourselves as Catholics.  Copy and paste the below link for more on this great program.
